November 15th, 2009

It amazes me how few singers appreciate the importance of correct breathing. If there is no breath there is no life. If there is no breath-there is no voice! Simple as Simon. If you do not control your breath, you have a zero chance of making it as a vocalist.

Look at how an eagle flies; he rides on the air currents -he locks his wings and soars higher and higher, right to the edge of the stratosphere! He plays the wind as he wills. You must learn, too, how to let your voice soar using the air current as a platform. This comes only with lots of practice. If you have a steady, firm and focussed flow-you will have fingertip control of your vocal tone.

Warm ups, as in athletics, are crucial. Make a regular habit of spending 15 minutes or so exercising your voice prior to actual singing. I love distance running, but there were times- in my more immature days, when I overdid it and strained my leg muscles. You need to understand, as a singer, that your vocal apparatus can be damaged too. You need to go gently to start with.

Tip One

Doing this as a regular habit, will not only improve your range and quality but above all keep you from straining your vocal chords which can damage your voice beyond irreparably, especially if you are prone to hoarseness. Stand, do not sit or you will cramp your diaphragm. » Read more: 4 Steps to a Great Singing Voice That Will Give You Star Quality
