When learning guitar, how important is the ability to read notes? By this I mean standard notation or sheet music. Well, it depends. If you’re just playing a little for fun, then you’ll probably be all right without it. Tabs will do just fine. But if guitar is your job, if you work with other musicians that can read standard notation, or if you want to be able to play whatever you want, regardless of style, and work with any instrument, then reading notes is a must.

For some people strumming and chords are enough. It’s funny how many don’t even realize that you can play individual notes on guitar, not just chords. Of course, those won’t come far with this kind of attitude. It’s very simple, if you want to get better and more versatile, learn how to read notes.
