Find Yourself through Laughter – How the Stand Up Comedy Professionals do it

February 20th, 2010

Laughs come in all shapes and sizes, loud and quiet, polite and extravagant and even the most embarrassing belly laughs can’t help but create more laughter around them! But what really makes us laugh?

When comedians touch on certain issues in a unique way, it makes us smile inside. Quite often, comedians discuss things in society in a more intimate, human centric way – a way that politicians and officials have made impossible by jargon infested language and hidden agendas. With a live comedian, the agenda is simple: for the audience to see the funny side of life.

Some issues that comedians touch upon include relationships, personal anecdotes, injustices, silly behavior and strange and funny experiences that we can all relate to. Comedians like Lee Evans, are more kinesthetic, illustrating their jokes with funny body movements or impressions. Others may be more verbose, using wordplay, double entendres or puns like comedian George Carlin was famous for. A special few stick to one-liners and perfect them until they can get the most laughs from the fewest words, like Mitch Hedberg. Some perform through music like The Flight of the Conchords, or Demetri Martin who uses presentations and amusing drawings. All of these are important forms of expression that find a way to make us chuckle.

For a joke to be funny, it must rely upon some prior knowledge, a cultural reference point or anchor. The punch line of the joke must be unexpected and delivered with great care. Comedy performers tirelessly rehearse their acts to perfect the timing of their jokes to extract the most laughter. Even though many rehearse, there are still a few who are just naturally funny and can spawn jokes from a seemingly limitless bag of humor.

Comedy is an art that relies upon getting a feel for the audience and many comedians, including Dave Chappelle, started their careers by being booed off stage at comedy clubs couple of times first. A good performer has the audience on the edge of their seat, hanging on every word, engaged and alert at the next laugh, and isnt afraid of testing the waters.

Comedians aren’t necessarily born (although many argue that Eddie Murphy was!) – most are created through hard work. Some are passionate about comedy through their personal struggles and this comes out in the performance, as Richard Pryor famously illustrated by making a comedy routine from his heart attack.

There’s a fantastic place that you can study and watch these famous comedians mentioned alongside comedians from all over the world. Its called Live Comedy Videos and its just started.

Eddie Izzard Tickets?from Comedy to Film Career

January 29th, 2010

Eddie Izzard tickets are now available at Stubhub.com!

With his unique brand of wandering, digressive rants and absurdist comedy, comedian and self-described “action transvestite” Eddie Izzard has made a name for himself. Unfortunately for all his many fans out there, it means he’s doing less stand-up. But he is still often in the public eye, acting in films and eventually starring in his own television show, “The Riches.”

It’s no surprise that Eddie Izzard would make the jump to cinema sooner or later. In “Dressed to Kill,” probably one of his most popular recorded performances, he mentions that his dream as a teenager was to get into films, which led him to hanging around film studios in the first place.

He did eventually make the jump. His acting goes back as far as “Tales From the Crypt,” when he appeared in an episode of that. But though he’s had a series of small, cameo appearances, his first notable role was in 1998’s “Velvet Goldmine.” In that, he played the avaricious, smooth-talking Jerry Devine, who becomes the manager for Brian Slade, a character obviously based on David Bowie. Izzard lent a bigger-than-life air to his character, as well as an appropriate level of scheming sleaziness that sold the character.

He also played the role of Bailey, a small role in the action adventure film “The Avengers” that same year.

In 1999, he had a brief cameo role as a hitman in “Mystery Men,” which, though it wasn’t a very successful film commercially or critically, did give him exposure in a mainstream film, much the same as his role in “The Avengers” did.

Two of his best roles came in 2000 and 2001 respectively, when he starred as a ego-driven actor in “Shadow of the Vampire” and “Charlie Chaplin” in “The Cat’s Meow.” Both these films received more praise from critics than his previous roles, certainly earning him the respect needed to make audiences understand he was serious about acting, and could play dramatic roles as well.

Though he’s still acting—often in very well-known movies—there’s nothing like being able to see him perform live. Get Eddie Izzard tickets and make that a reality.
